Wednesday, 01 May 2019 - Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2019 Opens Challenge for Innovators

The Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) announced the opening of Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2019 during a press conference held at Theatre Hall 3, Universiti Teknologi Brunei. Introduced in 2004, BICTA is an annual event organised jointly by the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and Infocom Federation of Brunei (IFB). 

Present at the press conference was Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, in his capacity as Acting Co-Chairman I of the BICTA 2019 Steering Committee.  Also present was Sheikh Haji Abas bin Sheikh Haji Mohammad, President of IFB as the Co-Chairman II of the BICTA 20019 Steering Committee.



With the objective to stimulate innovation and creativity in ICT, BICTA 2019 will open up participation by individuals, students, SMEs and organisations in three (3) categories namely:

  1. School Category - open for individuals or groups of students in Year 7 until Year 11;
  2. Tertiary Category - open for individuals or groups of students in Year 12 until Undergraduates; and
  3. Industry Category - open for Individuals, start-ups, companies and government entities.

     

    Each winner for the above categories will receive cash prizes of B$3,000, B$7,000 and B$10,000 respectively. There will also be five (5) Special Awards, namely Research and Development Project, Big Data Analytics Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology, Internet of Things (IOT) Technology and Start Up.

     

    BICTA 2019 competition is not only open to those who already has a product, but also to those who are motivated to turn their prototypes into reality. By creating a prototype, BICTA participants have the opportunity to create a three-dimensional version of their invention ideas. 

     

    This year's BICTA carries the theme 'Innovation for Digital Nation', which emphasises the importance of innovation stemming from the generation as we strive towards digital transformation to achieve Brunei Darussalam's Vision 2035. It is hoped that this digital generation, who was brought up in the age of technology, will produce the latest technological developments or innovative products and solutions for the social and economic advancement of the country.

     

    Also incorporated in BICTA 2019 is BICTA Plus which serves as a platform for BICTA participants to benefit from a mentorship and specialized programmes conducted by expert trainers. BICTA Plus covers a wide array of topics, ranging from ideation and validation, business plan, intellectual property and developing a market-ready product, which will enable participants to enhance their capacities and skills.

     

BICTA is a component of the Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards where the quality and categories provided are in-line with APICTA standards. Brunei Darussalam's participation in APICTA since 2008 has managed to win two (2) awards and twenty-five (25) merit awards to date. This year's BICTA winners will represent Brunei Darussalam in the APICTA which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam on 18 - 23 November.

 

All secondary and tertiary schools, as well as local individuals and SMEs having their own ICT products and services are encouraged to participate.
